Choosing Coffee Packaging: Freshness, Format and Fit

2026-09-29 · 7 min read

Choose coffee packaging by working backward from the coffee, the time and conditions before consumption, and the way the pack will be filled and opened. Whole beans and ground coffee do not always need the same format, and there is no universal bag or valve that guarantees freshness for every roast, pack size and supply chain.

First, define the coffee and its freshness target

Tell your supplier whether the pack contains whole beans or ground coffee, the roast and pack-out process, and how long the product is expected to remain in storage and distribution before use. Grinding increases the amount of coffee exposed to air, so ground products can have different aroma-protection needs from whole beans. The actual target should be confirmed through your own product and shelf-life validation.

Identify what matters most to your customer: preserving aroma, slowing oxidation, protecting the coffee from moisture and light, or making the pack easy to reseal. A good specification names the desired outcome and the distribution conditions instead of assuming that one material label delivers the same result in every case.

Balance barrier with filling-line performance

Share the filling equipment, sealing method, pack dimensions, expected throughput and any handling requirements. The film must protect the coffee and also form, fill and seal consistently on the actual line. Ask the supplier to explain the proposed structure and how its seal layer, stiffness and machinability relate to your equipment. If you are moving from one format to another, trial the new pack on the line before planning a full run.

Decide whether a one-way valve is appropriate

A one-way degassing valve is used on some coffee packs to let gas escape while limiting air entry. Whether it is needed, and where it should be placed, depends on the coffee, roast and packing process, the pack design and your storage plan. It is not a substitute for selecting an appropriate barrier, seal or shelf-life target. Discuss valve type, placement and compatibility with the pack supplier and coffee process specialist; validate the finished pack under your real conditions.

Pick a format that suits the customer and the line

Stand-up pouches can present well on a shelf; flat-bottom and side-gusset formats may suit different volumes and packing setups. A zipper can support repeated opening, while a tear notch or another feature may make first opening easier. Compare the usable fill volume, shelf footprint, case packing and storage after opening. Confirm that any closure or valve leaves enough usable panel space for artwork and mandatory product information.

Keep the material and sustainability claims specific

Multi-layer structures can combine properties that are difficult to get from a single layer, but their end-of-life options depend on local collection and recycling systems. If you want a recyclable or reduced-material option, ask for the full structure and the evidence that supports the claim in each sales market. Confirm that the proposed pack still meets your product-protection and line requirements before approving artwork or making a public claim.

What to send with a coffee packaging enquiry

Include coffee type (whole bean or ground), pack size and preferred format, roast and pack-out details relevant to venting, target storage and distribution conditions, filling and sealing equipment, order quantity per design, destination markets, desired closure or valve features, artwork status and the shelf-life objective you plan to validate. If you need guidance on the material structure, say so and request alternatives with their trade-offs.

Compare options on the same assumptions, then check samples for print, opening and handling and trial the preferred design on your filling line. Confirm freshness performance through an appropriate product validation plan. This makes the package decision measurable without treating any single feature as a guarantee.
